The City of Chengdu is situated in the middle of Sichuan Province, in the West Sichuan Plain. Chengdu is the capital of the "Heavenly State" (Tian Fu Zhi Guo).
It is a city that is steeped in history, a history that stretches back 2,400 years when the first emperor built his capital here and named the city. Through thousands of years its original name has been kept and its position as the capital and as the significant centre of politics, commerce and military of the Sichuan area has remained unchanged.
Since the Han (206B.C.-220) and Tang (618-907) Dynasties when its handicraft industry flourished, Chengdu has been famous for its brocades and embroideries. Chengdu was the place where the bronze culture, a vital part of ancient Chinese culture, originated; where the Southern Silk Road started; and where the earliest paper currency was first printed.
But in today¡¦s world Chengdu and Sichuan Province are world famous for two things in particular; it¡¦s wonderful spicy food and being the home of the giant Panda.
Chengdu is one of the most important economic centres and transportation and communication hubs in Southwestern China. It was chosen as one of the top ten cities to invest in and one of China¡¦s most livable cities. The city zone of Chengdu is 208 sq km andis 1,090 km from the South China Sea.
Chengdu¡¦s climate is comfortable. The short winter is mild while the summer is longer and the average daytime high in summer is 29¢XC.
The main industries in Chengdu include food, medicine, machinery and information technology. The Chengdu government is developing the city to be the financial hub for Western People's Republic of China and has successfully attracted major international financial institutions.
